Top 5 Web 2.0 Websites (that kick ass)

We’ve seen plenty of web 2.0 ideas come and go, website launches, blog announcements and articles written. Unfortunately, most of the new web 2.0 ideas are utter crap. Here’s Oomny’s Top 5 Web 2.0 Websites that kick ass which means they’ve been around the block or two AND still deliver the poop…
1. del.icio.us - An oldy but a goody, del.icio.us simply works, and works well for me. No ads, clean interface, no hoops to jump through and no problems (except a few outages here and there on the RSS feeds). I pull RSS feeds of a few select tags into Firefox 2.0 as “Live Bookmarks” and I have my mobile bookmarks, it’s that easy. No need to sync my home Firefox with the office, I run the same feeds both places AND have a large archive of links I can access at both places.
2. TechCrunch - TC gets the nod NOT because of the social or 2.0ness of their website, rather it’s 2.0 because of the content. If you’re “in the industry” of creating, maintaining buying or selling web applications and web business’s than TC better be on your daily visit list as it is THE place to learn about new launches, failures and general 2.0 news. It’s important however to get your news and opinion somewhere else as well (and maybe form your own), as the crew at TC tends to have too much sway around the Interweb.
3. Digg - I know what you’re saying, “Digg has gotten so…MySpacey” well look, it’s still Digg and it’s still pretty damn good. You just have to use a LOT more filtering to make it useful to you. I liken the rise and fall of Digg to email. Remember how cool email was? Well it’s still pretty rad but much less cool and useful due to the HUGE amount of fricken’ spam we get. Hence Digg’s main problem in 2007 and beyond. Digg has gotten so good at directing traffic that its becoming; #1 too influenced by specialists and; #2 a lot less focused on tech which makes the content less valuable to the people who could contribute the most (as opposed to your average tech noob looking for funny videos).
Meh, it still makes the list.
4. Slashdot - Slashdot has been around forever it seems and it only gets better with age (except for the last 12 months where they’ve been too preoccupied with competing with Digg which has caused a slight dilution of priorities but here’s hoping they’ll refocus on what SD is really all about and that is insightful discussion and flamewars…but I digress). Slashdot was social before is was cool to be social, Slashdot was 1.0, they are web 2.0 and will be web 3.1 as well (btw web 3.1 is MY term, get your own).
5. Fark.com - Fark.com is like Slashdot (in that they were 2.0 before that was even a term), and also like Digg in that I feel it’s value to me is shrinking as Drew expands it’s focus and reach. Regardless, it still kicks ass and makes me laugh. Fark’s biggest 2.0 element continues to be both the user submitted stories and very active “comment” section for each article.
There you have it, Oomny’s Top 5 Web 2.0 Websites that kick ass. The list is meaningless, it leaves out about a dozen other worthy candidates and really lacks consistency but hey, that’s what blogging is all about right?
